Personality; The Persona 3 cast can be considered a pretty gloomy bunch, but of all of them Junpei is the most laid back and easy-going. Fun (mostly in the form of playing video games and goofing off after school) and shadow hunting are the big priorities in his life, and sometimes take precedence over responsibilities like homework, studying, and even keeping his dorm room tidy. It's not that Junpei doesn't have his own share of problems and maturing to do (and believe me, there's a lot to do in that department), but he handles them much differently.
Junpei is not afraid to go up to a complete stranger and try to befriend them in most situations, offering friendly greetings and chatter to Minako in the beginning of the game until Yukari attempts to pry them apart. He even has the nerve and the guts to approach Chidori, a girl in gothic lolita style who prefers her solitude, and get to know her. He doesn't let her commentary that he's weird and strange bother him either. Despite his dedication to Chidori, Junpei has a general love for the ladies and will do just about anything to find cute girls to hang out with, such as when he organized 'Operation Babe Hunt' during their beach vacation to Yakushima and scoured the beach trying to impress any and all females (including one that was not quite so...). As for more threatening individuals who won't fall for his charms, he'll cower and back off a bit. This also goes for fellow allies, like Shinjiro Aragaki, whom Junpei respects, but knows to give space most of the time.
Friends are precious to Junpei. Having to deal with an abusive alcoholic for a father, he seeks favor and love at school from his pals in SEES and school. He wants nothing more than their attention, to hang out with them, and to be worthwhile in their eyes. During the game, Junpei tries to play matchmaker for Minako, and also took it upon himself to bring a Peeping Tom to justice who'd been sharing photos of her around school. When he found out he had the potential and was trapped in the Dark Hour, his senior/senpai Akihiko rescued him from the shadows. Junpei showered him with gratitude and had no qualms admitting his fear at the time whenever speaking about it around him.
While loving of his friends, Junpei has a desire to be noticed, appreciated and recognized. These feelings can sometimes put him on shaky ground, such as with Minako; at the beginning of the game, Junpei was jealous of her persona abilities and the fact that she was chosen to be the field leader. Though that jealously didn't always show in front of SEES members, it stood out when he was out on his own and hanging out with Chidori. He lied to her and told her that he was the leader of a group of secretive heroes, which led Chidori to believe that he was the leader of SEES and the target for Strega, the antagonistic persona team, to capture.
Junpei means well in the end, and he's able to grow and mature enough to set things right when it counts. He mans up and eventually admits his jealousy to Minako and later, his feelings to Chidori. Though Chidori had tricked him, Junpei loved her and would do anything for her. When she was in Tatsumi Memorial Hospital after her capture and breakdown, he visited her whenever he could, hoping she would reconnect with the world and speak. He even bought her a brand new sketchbook since she loved to draw, even though she never let him see what exactly she was sketching. Hearing that she was accepting of death so easily also worried him, and eventually his feelings for her caused her to start to fear dying. When Chidori is later revived, Junpei is overjoyed, and intent to remain her friend even though she's forgotten so much of her past.
In fact, it is Chidori who teaches him just what it is to be a real hero, and to value his life. When Takaya moves to kill Chidori for going against Strega's intentions, Junpei moves to protect her and takes the fatal shot. Junpei awakens in what appears to be Tatsumi Memorial Hospital, and Chidori tells Junpei that she wants to be with him forever, but that she's known that she will die on this day. Junpei blacks out and reawakens in Tartarus once more, Chidori's life essence given to him so that he won't die. Chidori's persona and Hermes merge, and Junpei's persona becomes Trismegistus. Once Strega retreats, Junpei decides not to waste her gift, and to live and cherish life for both himself and Chidori. After seeing the contents of Chidori's sketchbook, he commits himself to cooperating with Minako as their leader. He also devotes himself more to his studies and bettering his life, rather than moping around. Near the endgame when Junpei learns that Ryoji, a boy whom he became fast friends with and loved like a brother, is the Appriser of Nyx sent to harbor the end of the world, Junpei manages to continue to find the courage to fight with the help of his friends. He admits his fear and that he doesn't want to kill a friend, but Fuuka and Yukari tell him that even though he's afraid, he's still willing to fight which is admirable.
